Geometrical optimisation of a segmented HPGe detector for spectroscopic gamma emission tomography—A simulation study

Segmented coaxial HPGe (High Purity Germanium) detectors have recently been shown to be feasible for Gamma Emission Tomography (GET). This type of detector allows a combination high efficiency and energy resolution in gamma spectrometry irradiated nuclear fuel. The ultimate aim developing segmented GET measurements is achieve spatial facilitate imaging rod-internal features interrogation smaller fuel samples. In this work, we present the optimisation through simulation study using Monte Carlo particle transport code MCNP. Constraints each dimension were identified, from manufacturing limitations requirements arising use finite-sized collimator slit. particular, relationship between minimum inner radius segments azimuthal was derived based on identified constraints. Segment radial dimensions varied (based dimension) full misidentification rate evaluated obtain optimal dimensions. ranges segment determined.
